History

Between 1996 and 2007, the Grand Mosque was built.  The building complex is roughly 290 by 420 m in size and covers an area of more than 12 hectares when outside landscaping and car parking are excluded. The building's primary axis is turned around 11 degrees south of true west, aligning it with the Kaaba in Mecca, Saudi Arabia.

Statistics

The mosque can handle over 40,000 attendees, while the main prayer hall can hold over 7,000. There are two smaller prayer halls, each with a capacity of 1,500 people, one of which is dedicated to women. The courtyard is surrounded by four minarets that stand 351 feet above the ground. The courtyard, with its floral pattern, is around 180,000 square feet and is said to be the world's biggest example of a marble mosaic.

Architecturally significant

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque contains a number of unusual and one-of-a-kind features, including the carpet in the hall, is thought to be the world’s biggest, created by Iranian designer Ali Khaliqi and produced by Iran's Carpet Company.

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque has seven imported chandeliers from the Munich, Germany-based manufacturer Faustig, which include millions of Swarovski crystals. The biggest chandelier is the third-largest in the world and the second-largest known chandelier inside a mosque.

The pools along the arcades reflect the columns of the mosque, which are lit at night. Speirs and Major Associates created the one-of-a-kind lighting system to mirror the phases of the moon. Beautiful blue-grey clouds are projected in lights onto the exterior walls, becoming brighter and darker depending on the moon's phase.

The 96 columns of the main prayer hall are coated in marble and inlaid in mother of pearl, making it one of the few sites in the world where exquisite artistry can be seen.

The 99 names of Allah are depicted on the Qibla wall in traditional Kufic calligraphy, and the Qibla wall also incorporates delicate fiber-optic lighting as part of the organic design.

Important Information

The world's sixth-biggest mosque. There are various guided tours of the interior available during the day. There is a wardrobe code, which is extremely serious for ladies but less so for males (who can even wear shorts; albeit beyond the knee). You can easily get there via public transportation. Request that the bus driver notifies you when you arrive. The public bus stop is 100 meters before the mosque, and there are no more stops for the following 5 kilometers.

Entrance is via either the north or south gate (for free). Women and men can borrow appropriate clothing at the South Gate (men: white Kandora; women: black overdress). There are hourly English tours available between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.
